Being a CEO

That's the name for one of the compulsory courses for Term IV. Who are the teachers for this course you might think - well who else but top-notch CEOs themselves !!!

First Lecture by 'Prof.' Ajit Balakrishnan from rediff.com . Made the same presentation that he had made to his board of directors in January. Some snippets :

  • CEOs must communicate their ideas clearly to the Board of Directors
  • Considerable amount of CEO's time is spent in analysis of external environment for business
  • rediff.com's $ 1 Billion market cap on Nasdaq has been achieved with just 250 employees
  • Look at your business outside in - look at global competition
  • E-commerce in India and China will never pickup since Internet penetration is abysmally low
  • Link performance outcomes to elements of strategy
  • Be ruthless with yourself

Mr Ajit Balakrishnan is an alumnus of IIM C and is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIM C. He also spoke about his plans for IIM C and how he is working on preparing IIM C to meet global competition

Looking forward to the next lecture

A day to cherish SUNDAY

I think Sunday has been man's one of greatest creations.
what a thought... drink the night before and take a chill pill after a few days of hard work...

It was one of the best days i had today..(6th may)
i slept a full 13 hours on a trot...

I used to often do that on Sunday's (when i was working with Motorola)..
but these IIMC profs have left my eyes looking to catch a nap whenever possible..
You can manage one ever demanding boss...
but its almost impossible when every prof thinks you are here to do his umpteen
assignments, cases and quizzes...I forgot sth known as Sunday...
For the past one month we never had a Sunday.. it was all class days.

I don't think I ever slept more than seven hours on Sunday, since i came here ..

I am going to a temple today to pray to lord ..
May lord Ganesha make our profs realise and give us some less work to do.. .
As i utter my thoughts.. i hear the often repeated words..
"learn to handle pressure"
I hope to do that by the time I get out of here, with hopefully 11 subjects in my 6th and 7th term
in a 1.5 month course..
GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES

wish me another sunday in the next one month..

Industry Interaction Series

Had two presentations as part of Industry Interaction Series.

One on Medical Devices by a representative from Johnson and Johnson. J&J is one of my dream companies and it was quite nice to hear about the career opportunities in this sector

The second presentation was on Organized Retail Industry by the COO of Shoppers Stop and his team. Must say was impressed by the focus of the Shoppers Team on maximizing shareholder wealth. They aren't in the front pages of the economic dailies with their grandiose announcements but are doing good work in their own quiet way.

Good work placement committee

Have an interaction with Prof Nicholas Forsans from Leeds University Business School coming up on Wednesday. Look forward to that

Cheers

Little confused about the electives. Right now I am little biased towards marketing but not really too sure whether I will be able to take up a marketing role given my background. Anybody knows how to get a UN job. I am interested to work there. I think my background fits for that kind of a role.

Choice of electives

Completed the difficult job of deciding on electives. A wide array of subjects to choose from : finance, economics, marketing, operations, strategy, environment, behavioural sciences and sociology makes the choice indeed difficult. Lots of foreign faculty and local guest faculty apart from the best of IIM C's own teachers

Professors were very helpful in going through the proposed course outlines and counselling students on the appropriate choice of electives depending on career goals.

The Placement brochure has been received and placement office has started despatching them to companies.

Guest Lecture series should begin early next month

Lots of work to do and only 24 hours a day

Party Time

9/4- Quiz
11/4 - Quiz
13/4 - Exam
14/4 - Exam
15/4 - Quiz

That was the week that was. If you thought that was tough, there's worse to follow in the coming week

So on Sunday evening it was party time to celebrate the marriage anniversaries of 5 of our batchmates.

The staid TH was converted into 'The Dublin' with 'Chottu' as the DJ. Midway thro the party came the news that one assignment due for submission on Monday had been postponed - what followed was the proverbial 'demand spike' (for alcohol silly !!!). With one ex-Army guy and one ex-Customs guy in our fold not to mention many Sharaabis thats one commodity thats never in short supply. Liquor flowed like tears in a Ekta Kapoor serial. All had a great time - the kids specially.

Tried my hand at dancing - not good - i'll try to shake my leg next time. Better results hopefully

Came back and actually worked on the assignment. Amazing what a bit of alcohol can do to your creative spirits

Back to the grind now
